Sample vs population standard deviation

Standard deviation measures how spread out a set of numbers is around its mean. Use "population" when your data represents an entire group of interest, and "sample" — which divides by n-1 instead of n — when your data is a sample drawn from a larger population, since it gives a slightly more conservative (larger) estimate that corrects for sampling bias.
